Interviewing Tips

Here are some great tips to help prepare you for a job interview.

Prepare, Prepare and Prepare Some More

If you are not ready for the interview, it will show.  The first thing to do is to research the company for which you have landed an interview.  The best way to prepare for an interview is to actually go on one, but the next best thing is to do a mock interview.  There are references available with sample questions that are commonly asked.  Here are a few:

1.    Tell me about yourself

2.    What is one of your weaknesses?

3.    What are your strengths?

4.    Why did you leave your last job?

5.    What will you contribute to this company?

You should have the answers to all of these questions memorized (but be able to say them in a natural way).

Arrive Early and Look Professional

It is important to be on time for an interview.  Showing up late will show a potential employer that you are disrespectful and don’t care much for the job.  If something happens that will prevent you from showing up (and it should be a VERY good reason), make sure to call your interviewer and politely explain the situation and ask to reschedule.  It is important to not “give excuses.”

In addition, wear appropriate clothing to give a professional appearance.  A suit is probably your best bet, but appropriate business attire is essential.  If you are a woman, do not wear too much makeup or jewelry.  Your hair should be neat and professional and your overall appearance should refined and professional.

Introduce Yourself Appropriately

Show up to the interview alone (do not bring your children).  When you see your interviewer, smile politely while making eye contact, offer a firm handshake and introduce yourself.  Try your best to relax and not look too nervous.

Emphasize Your Skills

Once you start the interview, be confident and listen carefully to the questions.  If you are confused by a particular question, as the interviewer to restate the question.  When answering the questions, be direct and make positive statements about yourself.  It is important to use examples from past work experiences that illustrate your abilities and skills. Lastly, have a reference sheet readily available to hand to the interviewer if requested.

Ask Questions

During the interview, you will probably be given a chance to ask questions.  Here are some questions you may want to ask:

1.    What kind of training is available?

2.    When will the hiring decision be made?

3.    What opportunities for advancement are there?

At the end of the interview, make sure to thank the interviewer and end with a polite smile and another firm handshake.  You may want to ask the interviewer for a business card and follow up the interview with a thank you card in 2 to 3 days.
